Before I get myself a reputation as some kind of proper writer with metaphors, adjectives and everything, I thought it best to continue the Cupid=Stupid theme with an interactive game.

THE LOVE SONG GAME

NB: This is a game anybody can play so long as they have good hearing and a memory. Deaf people with senile dementia can play Trip The Careworker.

You will need either a pen and paper or one of those new-fangled Babbage computing machines to record your answers.

Think of the first love song that comes to mind – whatever it is.

Write it down

Now the second love song that comes to mind

Write it down

Keep going with this and compile a Top Ten list

You get the idea…

THE RULES

1. This is NOT a Top Ten in order of preference. You must record the song titles in the order you remember them. If you later remember the song you wish you had included earlier: too bad!

2. BE HONEST: DO NOT EDIT YOUR MEMORY! Even if you are full of cheesy love songs you actually hate, put them in as they occur to you. This game is about what you have in your head not what you wish you had in your head so that you look dead cool and funky. You are already dead cool and funky because you are reading this.

3. DO IT ON YOUR OWN – DO NOT ask other people for INPUT, and avoid looking at any other list until you have completed your own.

This is where my bare-faced cheek comes into it's own. I actually kept going and came up with a list of 21. But then, I've made it my mission to arm-wrestle Cupid in Valentine Resistance Movement style.

As I thought of these songs, I listened to them in the same order, which took all day. I started to weep when I got to "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Previously, this has always been an aspirational song for me - to love like that I always thought was so tender, complete and overwhelming. When I met my gorgeous girlfriend about 15 months ago, I really did take one look at her smiling face and become instantly interested in her. We danced until 3am. I woke up (on my own) smiling, and before opening my eyes I could see her face as clear as the sun. So for me this time love has been as described by this song.

I was so astonished by my Number 10, Rose Royce's "Is It Love That You're After (Or Just A Good Time)" that I nearly broke my rule and ignored what was playing in my head. But, I found it and listened and I boogied all around. Somehow this disco classic got in there and did for my adolescent limbic system.

12: Paul Simon, "Something So Right" - I wept more. Oh God I had to fetch a tissue. I am not afraid of my emotions, just my snot. "Some people never say those words 'I Love You' - it's not their style to be so bold.. Some people never say those words 'I Love You' - but like a child, they're longing to be told..." Paul, you got me with that one. Soft bastard.

16: "These Words" - Natasha Beddingfield - I don't really like this one but it's catchy and modern I guess - her lyric includes "Hyperbole" pronouncing it as if to rhyme with "Super Bowl" instead of "Hyper - Burly". It's Greek, you know.

17: "All I Ever Wanted" - The Believers - a lovely ditty by an obscure 80s rock soul band. The only version I have is from cassette so it's very trebly and hissy, but still it's a sweet song.

20: "Do I Worry?" - Ink Spots. Well, it's sort of about love - the flip side of love, jealousy - and so beautifully expressed.

21. I know.. I misnumbered them and had two 12s. Anyway, this is a nice song to end with, and what with her me-generation relationship analysis ramblings, Joni had to be in there somewhere. And so she popped... "I want to talk to you, I want to shampoo you, I want to renew you again and again, alive alive, I want to get up and jive, I want to wreck my stockings in some juke-box dive..."
